Raymond R. White, Ph.D.

Senior Associate Ecologist & Entomologist

Dr. White is a well-known expert on the special status butterfly species of the Bay Area.

He has conducted more than 35 years of research on the Bay Checkerspot butterfly starting with his Master Thesis at Stanford University in 1973. Many of the records on the distribution and abundance of this species in the Santa Clara Valley come from Dr. White's efforts in the late 1960's. Dr. White has not simply carried species-specific surveys for various listed species, but has been a significant contributor to the scientific literature for many of these (see Publication List below).

Dr. White has also been involved with endangered species surveys on San Bruno Mountain since 1983. He has been teamed with Live Oak Associates, Inc. since 1999 and is currently conducting surveys for listed butterfly species (San Bruno elfin, Mission blue butterfly, and Callippe silverspot) and their host plants on San Bruno Mountain for the proposed SummerHill Homes project at the Guadalupe Quarry in Brisbane. Other species that he has worked on include Smith's blue butterfly, monarch butterfly, zayante band-winged grasshopper, tadpole shrimp, and vernal pool fairy shrimp.

Dr. White has contributed significant effort to completing the San Bruno Mountain Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and a draft HCP that was prepared for Presley Homes for the Ranch on Silver Creek. He has participated in discussions with both state and federal resource agencies for a number of projects in the Bay Area. He has also published numerous publications on butterflies; particularly the Bay Checkerspot butterfly.
